Over the past decade, there has been a surge in the publication of books related to the history of Grenada. Grenada Heritage: A Pictorial Journey Through Place and Time takes you on a journey through Grenada’s past and explores the history and cultural diversity of our tri-island state. Some may view this publication as long overdue, but I believe that it is timely. We are now at a point where our heritage, which blends African, European and other ethnic influences, is being celebrated and appreciated.
Grenada, strategically positioned at the southern end of the Caribbean archipelago, is in close proximity to South America.
...moreThe indigenous people, originally from South America, settled in Grenada, Carriacou, and Petite Martinique and left their footprint on the culture and language of these islands. The verdant mountainous terrain, fertile soil and pleasant climate fuelled a rich biodiversity ideally suited to the growth of many tropical crops, fruits, herbs and spices. Grenada’s resources were highly prized and sought after. It is therefore not surprising that during the 17th and 18th centuries, fierce battles were fought over ownership of Grenada, with the island changing hands between the British and French several times.
This period of colonization left a distinct mark on Grenada in a variety of ways. The Georgian architecture seen in many buildings, the development of some of our customs, the French influence on our language and the names of some of our villages and towns are all highlighted in this publication as it takes us back from whence we came. The period of enslavement is also firmly rooted in our cultural heritage, manifested by the Big Drum Dance and Maroon Fest in Carriacou and Saraca and Shango in Grenada.
With all that is captured in this coffee table book, it is a must-read for visitors, students, historians, and all Grenadians interested in the preservation of our cultural heritage.
