Jennie EriksenPublic Speaking: From Competent to Captivating is a comprehensive guide designed for individuals at various stages of their public speaking journey, aiming to enhance their capabilities from being merely competent speakers to captivating ones. The book, written by David E. Guggenheim, is not a typical public speaking manual focused on the psychological aspects of fear and nervousness, but rather offers practical, real-world advice drawn from the author's extensive experience as a professional speaker. David leverages his unique background to provide insights into effective public speaking, emphasizing that the skills for captivating public speaking are attainable through dedication and training, rather than being an innate talent. The book outlines four major steps to improving public speaking abilities and confidence: overcoming myths about public speaking, meticulous preparation, practice, and refinement, and effectively connecting with and respecting the audience. These steps are grounded in the philosophy that much of the nervousness in public speaking stems from underlying, often unnecessary stress, and that being well-prepared and practiced significantly reduces this stress and boosts confidence. David debunks several myths about public speaking, such as the belief that great public speakers are born, not made, and the misconception that one must be an extrovert to succeed in public speaking. He also challenges the notion that charisma and stage presence alone can make a speech successful, arguing that these qualities, while beneficial, cannot substitute for a well-structured and clear message. An important aspect of the book is its emphasis on preparation. David advocates for thorough preparation, which includes defining the speech topic, understanding the audience, crafting, and revising the speech, conducting research, and preparing visuals. He asserts that this preparation is key to delivering a memorable speech and gaining confidence. The book also covers various types of speeches, including informational, keynote, motivational, persuasive/sales presentations, and training or demonstration speeches. Each type requires different approaches and techniques, tailored to the specific audience and purpose of the speech. Additionally, David shares insights on the use of technology and visuals in presentations, the dynamics of virtual conferences and speeches in the post-pandemic era, and the importance of ongoing learning and practice in mastering public speaking skills. Overall, 'Public Speaking: From Competent to Captivating' offers a blend of personal anecdotes, professional insights, and practical advice, aiming to empower readers to transform their public speaking skills and embrace speaking opportunities with confidence and effectiveness. As someone who works extensively with speakers and international events, this is a highly recommended 'must read.'
