“The former Army Chief has come out with a well-researched book based on his experience and practical knowledge on India-China border dispute, which would be of great benefit to those trying to study & understand the subject. My best wishes to General JJ Singh (Retd). https://t.co/aXaanbJWx1” (from X)
Sir Henry McMahon, a British colonial administrator, drew a line along the Himalayas at the Simla Convention of 1913-14, demarcating what would in later years become the eff¬ective boundary between the Tibetan region of China and the north-east region of India. The boundary, disputed by India s northern neighbour, has had a profound e¬ffect on the relations between the two Asian giants, resulting most prominently in the war of 1962 but also in several skirmishes and stand-o¬ffs both before and after that. Fortunately, since the 1980s, the leadership of both nations has adopted a statesman-like approach by opting to constructively engage and resolve the issue in a peaceful manner. Nonetheless, the unresolved boundary continues to be a thorn in the side reaching a flashpoint at the tri-junction between Tibet, Sikkim and Bhutan in Doklam in 2017 and may derail all the progress in bilateral ties if left unattended. General J.J. Singh former Indian Army chief and Governor of Arunachal Pradesh brings his long years of experience to bear on Sino-Indian relations in The McMahon Line. He examines the evolution of the boundary and the nuances of British India s Tibet policy from the eighteenth century through to India s Independence, analyses the repercussions for contemporary times and puts forth recommendations for the way ahead. The McMahon Line is an important treatise that advances the understanding of the strategic balance in a geopolitically sensitive region.

The rise of Narendra Modi is a watershed moment in Indian politics. In fact, such is the magnitude of his influence on the country that India's governance paradigm and political history can be easily divided into two distinct eras―pre-Modi and post-Modi. Modi became the chief minister of the Indian state of Gujarat in 2001. He was undefeated in all subsequent elections and became the state's longest serving chief minister. While Modi strode Gujarat like a colossus, propelling multi-dimensional progress, bigger responsibilities beckoned. Modi's exemplary success in Gujarat, paved the way for him to be popularly elected India's prime minister in an overwhelming victory in 2014. He is a prime minister unlike anyone earlier, both in terms of appeal and body of work. As a result, in 2019, he was re-elected with an even bigger mandate. His appeal is the result of his work in many domains over a long social, political and administrative career. Modi's impact is not restricted to India alone, and numerous national and international polls regularly declare that he is the most popular international leader. In 2021, Modi completed 20 continuous years as the head of a government. This book, a compilation of chapters authored by eminent intellectuals and domain experts, attempts a definitive and expansive exploration into the fundamental transformation of Gujarat and India over the last 20 years due to Modi's unique model of governance.
